Spring Term 2009

New Children's Centre

The Local Authority plan to build a Children’s Centre on the school site in the autumn. It will be open by April 1st 2010 and be built on the site of the old existing mobile classroom which will be removed and is situated near the double gate.

Children’s Centres are designed to support children, families and the local community through both activities/meetings at the centre, but also through going ‘out and about’ the area providing support services wherever they are needed.

The centre will benefit the school through being a community focus for our families and through the school Wrap Around Care Club meeting in it. The building will also provide much needed small group meeting space we can use by agreement with the centre manager.

‘Stowey Bears’ playgroup will have their own purpose built accommodation built as an extension the Children’s Centre.

School Restructuring.

Due to the falling roll because of the falling birth rate, the school will again revert to a 6 class structure from September 2009. We plan to have the following classes next year : R/1, 1/2, 2/3 , 4, 5 and 6. Historically the school was a 6 class school until 2003. These changes cause the staff more organisational issues than educational ones as all the children will continue to more forward in their learning whatever their ability.

We are using this opportunity to review our themes and topics so as to further develop our cross-curricular work whilst also seeking to use the outdoor environment more in our lessons. This will mean lessons and learning will be more enjoyable. Our refurbished wild area will be a real benefit to the school.

New Teacher Apointed

On Wednesday 20th May the governors and staff appointed Miss Cooper to be the new Class 5 teacher from September 2009. We had a strong field of nearly 50 applications and interviewed 5 before making the appointment. Miss Cooper is teaching in Devon at present and will be a real asset to the school. Can I thank the children who were involved in the lessons the candidates taught.

Garden Competition at Canninton

We were very proud of our Class 1 entry to the Cannington Garden Competition for which they were awarded a Silver Gilt Award. Well done to the children and staff who worked very hard last week preparing the garden – a much deserved achievement.

French Trip to Cricket St Thomas

The children who go to the French Club all went to Cricket St Thomas for the day. They were accompanied by Mr H Taunton and Ms Isabelle Huntley. Ms Huntley very kindly runs the after schools club every Tuesday for the school.

Once a year Cricket St Thomas turns itself into a French Theme park with all the notices and signs in French and invites all the schools in the area studying French to visit. This was the first year that children from Nether Stowey School attended.

Summer Term 2007

Ocean Commotion July 2007
This was the last school performance put on by Ms A Foyle, the school music teacher for 21 years. The children of years 5 and 6 put on another great performance. It was really entertaining and the children all performed outstanding especially considering the lack of rehearsals because of the number of events that take place this term.
