Science Week

Nether Stowey primary Schoo; had an action packed Science Week 14th -18th January.
They searched for star constellations in the "Star Lab"; they made paper, windmills and musical instruments with Caroline from Somerset Waste; they made electrical circuits with the Hinkley Point team. They also explored 'light' and 'sound' during workshops with Chris Banbury, a Science consultant from Devon.

Lots of Investigations went on in the classrooms including "Which material makes the best paracute?", "Can you light up a bear's cave?", "Who can build the tallest paper tower?" and many more.

The highlight for years 5 and 6 was a visit from 'James Bond' who finished his demonstration with a small explosion!
Here are some of the children enjoying the week. For more photographs visit the class pages.

Ocean Commotion Class 5 and 6

This was the last school performance put on by Ms A Foyle, the school music teacher for 21 years. The children of years 5 and 6 put on another great performance. It was really entertaining and the children all performed outstandly especially considering the lack of rehersals because of the number of events that take place this term.

Bridgwater Primary Schools Tag Rugby Festival
This was Stuart Woodhouse's last festival as he is returning to Australia in a couple of weeks. He set the event up 4 years ago and it has been very popular with the Bridgwater area schools. Stu also visited the primary schools and ran coaching sessions after school. Nether Stowey School will miss him and at the end of the competition presented Stu with a fantastic cake cards and a little something to remember us. The event is hosted and run by Bridgwater and Albion Rugby Football club, many thanks to the organisers and all the helpers.

Although both Nether Stowey teams didn't win the children all performed really well, the mixed team of girls and boys only lost two matches to Western Zoyland and in the semi final to Enmore 1st team. Again this year we walked away with the player of the Festival, which went to Georgie Youé she scored a try in every match, a couple of times running the whole length of the pitch, a great effort.

Children enjoying their visit to village church

The aims of the visits were to develop links with the wider church community, and learn about St Mary's the village church. Everyone enjoys their day at church where the children took part in a number of activities, which included a Graveyard worksheet, a Treasure hunt in the church, climbing the church tower and of course ringing the bells- this proved to be the most popular. The class teachers were helped by 12 volunteers from the church, and the Head teacher and the Rev. Craig Marshall who between them planned the weeks activities.

Wisteria Competition May 2007

Class % who received the Broze Award in the Wisteria Competition.

On a very rainy day in May Class 5 gardening club were to be found at Cannington college putting together the garden they had designed for the Wisteria competition.
Christa Gambier who organised the club was very proud as they were awarded the Bronze Award. All of the other schools had parents and teachers doing the construction jobs but Nether Stowey children did it all themselves.

They had 4 months to design, research, scrounge and construct their 2m x 2m garden and the last few days before the festival were spent in torrential rain bricklaying, bamboo hurdle making and planting. The children who all worked really hard were:- Sara Gambier, Alex Barton, Nathanael Williams, Sam Morgan, Sennen Meredith and Katie Garland.

Teachers playing Nether Stowey's Netball Team

Friday 23rd March 2007

This week the whole School took part in a number of activities to celebrate School Health Week. On Thursday the whole school ran a marathon between them raising sponcership for one of the school's charities.
They also decided to arrange a match for the teachers against the school netball team. This was a very exciting match and very close for the first two quarters. With scoring being matched, the girls of the netball team played very well even with the height disadvantage, the teachers were having a few problems with netball rules, especially the male members, Mr Hollidge and Mr Taunton- they showed remakable enthusiasm and ability for novices, Mrs Hoare, Mrs Meredith, Mrs Watters and Miss Cleaver certainly showed a netballing past. The teachers made great use of their height advantage in the 3rd and 4th quarters, with some very good scoring, the girls of the team played very well but the teachers were able to intercept more balls and played some good netball. The final score was Teachers 11 Netball Team 5.
