League Match 7/03/2007
Nether Stowey 2 Somerset Bridge 4
NS Fielded an experimental side because the coach of SB had described his team as very wesk. They certainly weren't that. They completely dominated the first half and NS were lucky to turn around only 2-1 down. Jonty was probably the pick of the home team with a few good saves which kept his team in touch.
For the second half, Olly , Wilkie and Jordan were brought on. Now NS had most of the pressure but they couldn't convert it into goals because of some fine goalkeeping, tough tackling and interceptions. James Baker did bring the score level with 10 minutes to play but SB were quick and skillful on the break and they notched two more for a well deserved victory.
Best players -: Jonty and James.

Cup Match Nether Stowey against Westover Green
Score Nether Stowey 4 Westover Green 5
HEARTACHE!
This was a superb football match full of excellent goals. Unfortunately NS let a 3-1 lead slip and allowed WG back into the game when they were looking beatable. NS came so close to forcing extra time when Regan's shot slid against the inside of a post, rolled along the line and out. The final whistle blew seconds after that. It could so easily have been a different outcome.
A Wilkie header from a corner made it 4-3 but then a mix up in defence gifted another equaliser for WG. With excitement rising WG scored with a breakaway goal. They now played with renewed belief and Joe made a couple of important saves by narrowing the angle. WG just held out and they were delighted in the end.
NS played well against organised opponents and should not be downhearted.
Player of the match - Wilkie

Magnifico!
It was hard to believe that this was the same team (almost) who capitulated to Catcott. Everything that was missing in that game was present in this one. Determination, communication, skill and team work.
It started badly with an early well taken goal by the visitors but as soon as Regan put the sides level you could see NS grow and NP shrink. A well aimed toe pokke from Jack Rich (his first goal) put NS in front at half time but at the break it was too close to call.
This was a superb responce to what happened last time. Well done to all 10 players.
Player of the Match - Jordan Buller.
Most improved player - Jack Rich
Goals - Regan 1, Jordan 3, own goal and Jack Rich 2.

League Football Match Nether Stowey against Catcott
Score Nether Stowey 1 Catcott 8
Well we obviously don't like playing in the mud! a very good Catcott side gave NS a severe chasing and they will be the season's favourites for the league. (Hopefully there isn't anybody stronger!)
It was all fairly even for the first 10 minutes. Catcott scored from a corner with a header and Jordan replied with a header from a long throw from Olly. Cattcott went 3-1 up at half time but you felt that NS could have been closer if they didn't insist on trying to beat a competent keeper from 30 yards out. Possession was squandered by a panicky clearances and wild passes.
The second half was Catcott all the way. They moved the ball around very smoothly and had a good awareness of each others abilities and positions on the field. They broke with pace and did well in one on one situations closing in on goal.
NS did not give up and kept going in the face of the difficult opposition. I was impressed by the way that Wilkie in particular kept trying to use the ball and Olly gave everything as far as effort is concerned. We haven't had many training sessions and it showed in this game.
Player of the match - Olly Heal.

League Football Match Nether Stowey against Westonzoyland
Score Westonzoyland 5 Nether Stowey 3
No need to worry about losing an unbeaten record then! This was our first defeat in league football for over two years and the damage was done in the first 10 minutes. We conceded two goals and, had it not been for Joe Forshaw, it would have been several more. We wew thoroughly outplayed in this spell by easily the best WZ team we have met.
To their credit, NS rallied quite stronly and there were moments in the second half when it looked like we might get a draw. After going two behind, a fine long ball from Jordan released Regan and he nearly found the corner of the net. Unfortunately, just before half time, WZ got a third when, yet again, NS failed to clear the ball from their penalty area.
The second half was much more even and NS showed more determination. The long throw from Olly proved a vital weapon again. One of these throws was nudged in by Sam Morgan, who had a good second half. Unfortunately, WZ were quick on the break and they stretched the score 4-2. Then another Olly throw was palmed into his net by the goalie and there were a couple of goal mouth scrambles which could have brought the 4th. WZ again broke away to finish the scoring- they deserved to win.
NS will need to work harder as a team and show more courage if they are to have a successful season.
Player of the match- James Mear.

Knockout cup match Nether Stowey against Hamp
Score Nether Stowey 5 Hamp 1
Our first competitive game of the season was a fairly comfortable win over a team we don't usually encounter. They play in Division 1.
Scoring in the first minute, Regan was the marksman, was a great confidence booster and from that moment on NS always looked likely to triumph. Jordan swept a shot in with his right foot from 10 metres for the second after 10 minutes but NS were fortunate to keep a two goal lead because Hamp had a couple of talented players who brought two excellent plunging saves from Joe Forshaw.
Getting the ball quickly from the back to the front repeatedly caught out the Hamp defence but the third goal, just before half time, came from a different source. This was an own goal from a right wing corner.
Regan showed composure to roll the 4th past a stranded keeper before Hamp got the goal they deserved after a flowing move. Jack Rich went in goal and made one flying save which thwarted any Hamp fight back. The 5th goal was the result of one of Olly's prodigious throws. The ball was headed, like a striker, by one of the Hamp players past his own keeper.
This performance had many plus points. Determined, no nonsence defending, masses of effort and some nice moves normally centred on Jordan's good distribution. The finishing wasn't the best and, against better sides, this could have been a problem.
Well Done, on we go into round 2.
Goals -: Regan 2 , Jordan 1, 2 own goals.
Player of the match - Jordan Buller
Most improved player - James Baker

Ewart Hebditch 11 a side cricket finals at Somerset County Cricket Ground on July 12 th 2006
It was a thrill to be part of this event which showcased the four best state schools in Somerset. Each team had won through the qualifying rounds and it was clearly going to be a tough task for our team. There was a sprinkling of Somerset under 11 payers in the other teams but, nevertheless, without winning either game Nether Stowey competed well and only lost by small margins.
1st match v Trinity school, Taunton. NS 87 for 8 (20 overs) T 90 for 6 (13 overs)
T were the holders and had two very fine players opening both batting and bowling. If they could be nullified we would win. Batting first, NS were going very nicely at 35 for 1 off 6 overs when there was a collapse. Leach took two wickets in his last over and held a catch diving forward at extra cover to dismiss Jack before he could get going. Tom had been run out by a direct hit from the same player. The solid Lee fell also and there was a rebuilding job to do. Rhys and Kira did this, just picking up the odd single and watching the extras mount up. This mini recovery was carried on towards the end when Jay played some bold strokes. The final score looked 20 short of a good score.
The first over of the T innings was a shock. Jack was carted for 16 by the swinging bat of Leach. Burgess at the other end looked accomplished and the score raced along with 36 off the first 4 overs. Then Jack removed Leach with a fine pitched up ball and this revealed a fairly weak batting order below the top two. Wickets fell regularly but NS sent down too many full tosses which Burgess could whip to the short boundary. The fielding was very good and three run outs kept it interesting. Lee and Kira were especially impressive in the field. NS would only win if Burgess was dismissed – he wasn’t. He carried his team home with a classy 52 not out. He and Leach had scored 74 of the 81 runs scored off the bat.
Batting – Tom 8, Lee 15, Jack 9, Will 0, Jordan 0, Rhys 10 not out, Mike 0, Kira 1 not out, Jay 9, Jake W 0 not out. Jake C did not bat.
Bowling – Jack 3/37, Jay 0/23, Lee 0/14, Will 0/3, Jordan 0/5
2nd match v Selwood School, Frome. Selwood 120 for 7 (20 overs) Nether Stowey 114 for 9 (20 overs)
NS came very close to pulling off a win in this gripping game, falling just 6 runs short. Both teams seemed a bit tired and the fielding of both sides wasn’t as good as earlier on. The weather was hot and fatigue was a factor.
S had changed their order with some less experienced players at the top of the order and NS exploited this. S were 6 runs for 4 wickets after 3 overs but they had strong batting to come. Although he didn’t know it, Jack had a hat trick. He took a wicket with the last ball of his first over and then took wickets with each of the first two balls of his next over. The very next ball was a run out aswell! 4 wickets in 4 balls.
The score then grew rapidly and a total of 140 plus looked likely as Sanger hit out. Several fours were given away as the fielders failed to keep out routine shots which probably deserved no more than one. Sanger retired on 51 and the score slowed up. 120 was a gettable score but it would have been less without 13 wides.
Three or four players needed to get a good score and that was pretty much what happened. Tom again got out when he seemed set for a big score. Jack had another rapid cameo, including a big six to mid wicket, before Will settled in with the rock like Lee. 57 for 1 after 7 overs was a position of strength but wickets fell at the wrong times. Sanger brought the score to a standstill. Lee was batting beautifully, guiding the ball into spaces, but he got restless and holed out for 32. Will went soon but then Jay again showed his relish for the task with a fast 13.
Now behind the run rate, NS had to feed off scraps – running for byes, picking up wides and running for some very short singles. The requirement for the last over was 10 to win. This was too much with the tailenders batting and NS fell short by just 6 runs. 114 was a high score. A good match with S just deserving the win.
Batting- Tom 6, Lee 32, Jack 17, Will 14, Jay 13, Jake C 5, Rhys 0, Mike 0, Kira 3 not out, Jordan 3, Jake W 0 not out. Colin fielded.
Bowling – Jack 3/26, Jay 0/18, Jake C 1/25, Lee 0/12, Jordan 1/6, Will 0/10, Rhys 0/7, Mike 0/3.
The whole day was a success and, although not winning, I am sure that everybody involved enjoyed it.
Batsman of the day – Lee
Bowler of the day – Jack
Fielder of the day – Kira/Lee.
Table Tennis Tournament
This years Table Tennis Tournament for children aged 10 and under took place at Chilton Trinity School on Wednesday 21st June. Nether Stowey was represented by 2 girls Georgie Youe and Alice Pike, the smallest team taking part. Over 30 boys and girls from schools in the area took part. Both Georgie and Alice did well in their round robin matches, against some very good competition.
Georgie lost her 1st match to the best player there, Jessica from St George's School Wemdon (The outright winner of the older girls). She then won against the others in the group, only narrowly beating Alice, in the only match that went to 3 games!
Alice played really well she also lost to Jessica who was proving herself to be the best girl player, and her game with Georgie was very good with the score being very close in all 3 games. Alice finished 3rd in the group and Georgie finished 2nd so this put Geogie into the semi-final. This she lost to the winner of the other group. The final was very good with Jessica winning.
The children playing were all very enthusiatic and every one watching enjoyed the exciting games, the standard was very good. Well Done Alice and Georgie!
